The Paper Press: Why Was It Important?

The mass production of printed materials made possible by the printing press allowed for a much greater spread of knowledge and literacy among all socioeconomic groups. Prior to the development of the printing press, all works created during the history of writing could only be copied by hand or using slow, laborious methods called block printing that were inefficient and expensive. The printing press cleared the way for the democratisation of knowledge by drastically reducing the time and cost of copying works.
